King's students top tips

A selection of advice from current and former students

Be in the know

Sign up for King's Alert and become a ‘fan’ of the King’s Career Networks on Facebook to get messages about jobs and careers.
We do not get your email address automatically when you start at King’s, so if you don’t sign up, you will miss out!

It is never too early to start putting together your CV

Starting with a CV and keeping it up to date really saves you time in the long run. It’s the essential tool for any type of job hunting.

We can help you create your perfect CV

Most experience is good experience

University offers so many opportunities to acquire useful experience, while you are getting your degree. Check out all the activities at the Students’ Union, find out about work experience at the King’s Part-time Work Fair and Vacation Work & Internship Fair. Employers really want to focus on your extra-curricular activities and the skills you have developed, so don’t leave it until your final year!

First impressions

They really do count - companies that attend the fairs often take the names of students they chat to. When their application deadline is reached, some search for those names and read their applications first!
We have lots of events happening throughout the year where you can meet employers, many of whom are former King’s students. Keep checking our events calendar so you don’t miss anything

Re-read your application before an interview or assessment centre

You either had to submit your CV and covering letter or complete an application form to get an interview. So go over the main points and skills you have highlighted, as you will more than likely be asked about them and be prepared to expand on them.

Research, research

Always research the company, its recent accomplishments, strategy, clients. Also research the industry the company is in. You are bound to be asked the killer question “Why do want to work for us?” A thoughtful, considered answer that demonstrates your knowledge of the company will always make you stand out.

Keep up-to-date

Buzz words here are “Current Affairs” and “Commercial Awareness.” Grab a newspaper, watch the news, make sure you know what’s going on in the world and have some opinions about it. Think about how events in the world might impact the company to whom you are applying.
One financial company told us recently that a student they interviewed in November 2007 hadn’t heard about the Northern Rock Crisis - needless to say, they weren’t impressed!
