On employability; or valuing your History degree ...

In a survey of 84 famous historians carried out by Prof Nicholls and published by the Higher Education Academy, Princess Diana's biographer, Andrew Morton, said a history education "helps with judgment and at the top level judgment counts more than knowledge” . The most frequently referred to advantage the famous history graduates mentioned was the ability to read quickly and effectively and process large amounts of information, think deeply about a subject, develop cogent arguments and communicate clearly.
‘Report highlights golden future of history graduates’~ Donald MacLeod Tuesday July 19, 2005 in The Guardian.

Many graduates chose careers unrelated to their course of study and have made their mark in a whole range of careers. 13% entered professional or managerial roles in commerce, industry or the public sector; 4% teaching and related roles; 26% clerical and secretarial roles; and 14% catering or retail work. Financial-related careers feature at a small but significant level: 5%. Unemployed history graduates accounted for 9%, just above the national graduate unemployment rate of 7%. The overall picture of history graduates is similar to that of other non-vocational graduates.
