Course specific careers information
To supplement the general advice we give elsewhere – which could apply to any student – we have gathered here some information that applies more directly to particular courses, departments or schools.
Points to consider
- How closely do you want to "use your degree", for example, if you are a scientist do you want to apply your research skills in a lab?
- What alternative ways are there to exploit your knowledge, for example could you work in intellectual property or teach?
- Perhaps more than half of all jobs do not require a particular degree – recruiters are more interested in your skills, potential for development and motivation. So you may have many more career options.
Things to do
- Check the specific articles in the school links for suggestions relevant to you.
- Look at relevant titles in the series of "Options with your subject" pages on the Prospects website. These give some basic suggestions on how to apply your subject in the world of work.
- Look on our events listing for details of talks, presentations, workshops, forums and fairs that are targeting your subject area.
- Come to the Careers Service to read lists of what previous students from your course have gone on to do. This can sometimes prompt fresh ideas for you.
- If you are thinking about doing further study, chat to your academic staff who will know what are the topical areas of research and where good courses are offered.
- Talk to a careers adviser about how postgraduate study might fit into your longer-term career plans.
