First steps Interests and aspirations Exploring job ideas Working overseas Further study Making decisions Developing a plan of action Developing a plan of action part 2

First steps

‘The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.’
George Bernard Shaw

If you:
  • know what you want to do
  • have a reasonable understanding of role requirements
  • can explain and justify your reasons
  • have devised a realistic plan of action, which incorporates a measure of flexibility in case you need to respond to something unexpected…

…then you don’t need this section and could move on to CVs and Applications. If not, read on.

This section aims to help you generate or organise ideas about jobs that would interest you. It will prompt you to find out more about day to day aspects of the jobs you are considering and where they might lead. It will also encourage you to examine how you could evaluate different options when making your career decisions.

Some people compare this process of career choice to a journey. Your journey might take weeks or months or even years. Only you will know when you have arrived at a satisfactory choice.

We start by considering your Interests and Aspirations, then Explore Job Ideas, look at whether Further Study would be a good option, evaluate Working Overseas and assess the process of Making Decisions. Finally, we draw together these conclusions and consequent activities into an Action Plan.
