Value of my degree
When I tell people what I did at university and what I do now, they often think it’s been a strange route into the world of transport. But studying theology gave me the ability to conduct thorough research, analytical analysis of written materials and communicate effectively; all skills that I needed to succeed in my career.
Extra curricular activities like getting involved in a King’s Musical Theatre society and being President of KCLSU gave me an insight into being part of a dynamic organisation that prides itself on striving to achieve the very best. It gave me the opportunity to do something that I was passionate about and get paid for it and showed me that in the Public or Third Sector it was possible to combine passion with earning a living.

Public sector work
Working in the Public Sector is challenging but you know that when you go home at night you’ve had the opportunity to make a difference, in my case, to over 2 million passengers every day. I’ve already had among other things the opportunity to influence how TfL will fulfil its part of the 2012 Olympic bid, manage a major London Underground station and shape the future of the world’s biggest underground network. London Underground are also sponsoring my MSc and investing in my future through other sector relevant training – something that doesn’t always happen in the Private Sector.
Top Tip
Remember to think laterally about what you’ve done at University and how you can apply the skills you learnt there to your chosen career – the Careers Service is very good at helping you to translate your experiences into concrete examples to help you secure the career you would like.
