Working in conflict resolution

In response to a query, here are some on-line resources for those interested in working in the field of negotiating solutions to international tensions. There is not much careers material available as this is not an area that many young graduates would enter direct from university. It is probably necessary to gain experience in related types of work, gain skills and knowledge, and then transfer to conflict resolution.

General information sources

  • INCORE a joint project by University of Ulster and the UN to address the management and resolution of conflict by research, training, etc to inform and influence national and international organisations. Includes a library search engine, very rich information database of journals, organisations, researchers and resources for this field of study, news, vacancies with INCORE, etc.
  • UN and Conflict Monitor "Quarterly digest of news and documents focusing on the UN's role in conflict resolution".
  • Richardson Institute online with certificate and MA courses in conflict resolution e.g. a course run in collaboration with Lancaster & RTC.
  • Conciliation resource "serves as an international resource for local organisations pursuing peace building and conflict resolution initiatives. Our principal objective is to support the sustained activities of those working at community or national levels to prevent or transform armed conflict into opportunities for social, political and economic development based on more just relationships."
  • ELDIS part of the eldis gateway to development information.
  • Reuters foundation alert pages "Alerting humanitarians to emergencies".
  • John Hopkins University career profiles although having a US perspective may be of interest. There is information on working in conflict resolution. Follow links on their site to "student services" then "careers services" and then "sector profiles".

Organisations

Try a search engine for potential recruiters. A pretty good list of international ("Multi-Governmental") organisations which may be relevant as sources of information, if not jobs, can be found on the Google directory or in the INCORE information bank. A selection of bodies' pages is:
