Confidentiality and Data Protection

We provide a confidential service. The fact that you make use of Student Counselling, and what you talk about in your sessions are both treated as confidential. We will not communicate with anyone outside the service about you unless you request this, e.g. you may ask us to write to your tutor if your problems are affecting your studies.

The only exception to this rule is if the counsellor believes that there is a risk of severe harm to yourself or others, in which case the counsellor will discuss this with you and seek your permission to break confidentiality. In life-threatening emergencies confidentiality may have to be overridden.

Will it go on my records if I have Counselling?

No, nothing will appear on your medical or academic files, your degree transcript or anywhere else. If anyone telephones the Student Counselling Service to ask whether a particular student is seeing a counsellor, they will not be given this information. The exception is if the student has given express permission for that information to be passed on to someone.

When might I need to give my counsellor permission to tell someone something about me?

If your work is being affected by personal problems it may be helpful for your counsellor to liaise with your tutor or another person within the university. Given our confidentiality agreement, we would normally make such a contact only with your permission.

As already stated, if a counsellor is given information which suggests that a person is at risk of actual harm, the counsellor may wish to obtain permission from the student to contact someone.

All students should be registered with a GP and you may decide to inform them that you are seeing a counsellor within our service. If it is appropriate, we can liaise with or make referrals to a variety of psychological, therapeutic or psychiatric services in the community. We can also arrange psychiatric assessments within the service.

Any further questions regarding confidentiality may be discussed with your counsellor in the initial appointment.
