The British Museum

The British Museum holds a collection of art and antiquities from ancient and living cultures. Housed in one of Britain's architectural landmarks, the collection is one of the finest in existence, spanning two million years of human history. Highlights include famous antiquities such as the Rosetta stone.

The British Library houses one of the greatest collections of the written word in the world. See world famous items like the Lindisfarne Gospels, the Gutenberg Bible, Shakespeare's First Folio of 1623, King John's Magna Carta, Handel's Messiah and original Beatles' manuscripts.

The Tate Modern

Bankside SE1 9TG

A short walk from Stamford Street Apartments, the Tate Modern was created in the year 2000 from a disused power station on the bank of the Thames. It displays the national collection of international modern art. This is defined as art since 1900. Entry is FREE, although there is a charge for some exhibitions.

The Tate Britain

Tate Britain is the world centre for the understanding and enjoyment of British art and works actively to promote interest in British art internationally. The Tate Britain calls on the greatest collection of British art in the world to present a picture of the development of art in Britain from the sixteenth century to the present day. Entry is FREE, although there is a charge for some exhibitions.

The National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856 to collect the portraits of famous British men and women. Today the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. Ideally situated for guests staying at Stamford Street Apartments.

John Soane's Museum

13 Lincoln's Inn Fields, WC2

Sir John Soane was the architect of the Bank of England. His own home in Lincoln's Inn Fields is now known as the Sir John Soane Museum and is an amazing museum dedicated to his works and incredible collections. Entry is FREE, but groups of 6 or more must book in advance.

A world class collection of over 80 aircraft, aviation memorabilia and artefacts. Don't miss the simulator ride, hands on section and interactive sound and light show too.

The Geffrye Museum

The Geffrye Museum is one of London’s best-loved museums. It shows the changing style of the English domestic interior in a series of period rooms from 1600 to the present day. Entry is FREE

Leighton House is home of classical painter, Lord Leighton. The dazzling gilt mosaics and Oriental tiles of the Arab Hall evoke the world of the Arabian Nights.

Kenwood House

Hampstead Lane, NW3

Situated on Hampstead Heath (not far from Hampstead Campus), Kenwood House is one of the finest examples of the work of architect Robert Adam. This stunning villa contains a spectacular library and fine neo-classical furniture. It also holds the most important private collection of paintings ever given to the nation. Scenes from the film Notting Hill were staged here.

Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is an impressive collection of European paintings, miniatures and sculpture. The twenty eight rooms present collections of French 18th century painting, furniture and porcelain together with paintings by Titian, Canaletto, Rembrandt and Gainsborough.

Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green

The Museum of Childhood houses one of the largest and oldest collections of childhood items in the world. Highlights include toys and games from around the world such as coin-operated mechanical toys and a fine collection of children's costume. The museum also operates a varied activities programme for children every weekend and during school holidays.

Bethnal Green (Central)

National Army Museum

The National Army Museum tells the story of the British soldier in peace and war, through five centuries. You can experience what it was like to be bombarded in a First World War trench and see the meagre wartime rations.

Royal Academy of Arts: The John Madejski Fine Rooms

Burlington House, Piccadilly, W1

Home to the Academy's permanent collection, these fully restored 18th century fine rooms now house many national treasures. Focusing predominantly on British art and architecture from the 18th century to the present day, it includes works by renowned British painters such as Reynolds, Gainsborough, Turner and David Hockney.

The Photographers’ Gallery

The Photographers’ Gallery is one of the UK's primary venues for photography and one of London’s most popular public galleries with over half-a-million people visiting in 2004. Established in 1971, the Gallery was the UK's first independent photographic gallery.

Leicester Square (Piccadilly, Northern)

Freemason's Hall

Freemason's Hall was built after World War One as a tribute to all the Masons who lost their lives.
The very opulent main building is an addition to the Victorian one built around the original which dates from 1775. There are free hourly tours 1100 - 1600 Monday - Friday. The blue staircase is well worth it and you can also go into the Temple itself.

Royal Opera House

The public rooms at the Royal Opera House are free from 1000-1530 every day. There are free recitals at 1pm – but tickets are required and can be collected at 10am. A visit to see the building's grandiose architecture is well worth it. Somerset House's Nelson Stair, Seaman's Waiting Hall and interpretation gallery can all be seen for free, and it's only a short walk over the river from Stamford Street Apartments),

Royal Society of Arts

The Royal Society of Arts is another architectural gem and has recently opened its doors to the public. On the first Sunday of every month, from 1000-1300, visitors can roam the Adam Brothers' historic rooms, dating back to the 1770s – for free, of course. The Notting Hill Carnival

Europe’s biggest street party takes place on the August bank holiday weekend (the last Sunday and Monday of August).

Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace

The Changing the Guard is a must see event for any visitor to London. The Queens' Guard is changed at 1130 inside the gates of Buckingham Palace and can be viewed from outside. The 40-minute ceremony takes place daily between April and July and on alternate days for the remainder of the year.

Ceremony of The Keys

This 700 year old ceremony of the locking of the main gates of the Tower of London is carried out every night of the year at 2150 by the Chief Yeoman Warder of the Tower accompanied by an escort of Guards. Passes are essential to attend the ceremony and can be obtained free of charge upon written application to: The Ceremony of the Keys, HM Tower of London, London EC3N 4AB.

The South Bank

The area around the South Bank next to Stamford Street Apartments, comes alive during summer time. There are often free festivals in Bernie Spain Gardens next to the Oxo Tower building and in the gardens next to the Embankment. Live music, dance, performance art and children's events make up summer's Coin Street Festival which takes place by the Oxo Tower, programme details can be obtained from +44 (0)20 7401 2255. During July and August, the floors, foyers and terraces of the South Bank transform into stages for performances by the top names in music and dance. St-Martin-in-the-Fields Church

This historic church, designed by James Gibbs and built in 1726, overlooks Trafalgar Square. FREE lunchtime recitals take place on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Features include Cafe in the Crypt, a gift shop, art gallery and market in the courtyard. The church crypt is also home to the London Brass Rubbing Centre, which offers a unique opportunity for all the family to make pictures, with this simple technique.

The Barbican is Europe's largest multi-arts and conference venue, presenting a year-round programme of art, music, film and theatre. Many of the events are FREE.

Shopping & Markets


Spitalfields and Brick Lane

Best visited on a Sunday when the area really comes alive, Spitalfields has an excellent arts & crafts market to complement the fashion shops and clothes markets of bohemian Shoreditch. A short walk south from Shoreditch Tube Station will take you past a number of cafes, the Truman Brewery , and the Bangladeshi area of Brick Lane – London’s curry capital! Right of here is the Hugenot with its idiosyncratic houses, and this borders Spitalfields market, half of which is now housed under a huge glass and steel building.

Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Shoreditch (Central, District/Hammersmith & City, East London)

Portobello Road Market

The famous Portobello Road Market is held in ultra-trendy Notting Hill, and is most well-known for its Saturday antiques market towards the south end of the road. During the week it is full of fruit & vegetables as well as food stalls, while on Fridays there is a second hand market. It is open throughout the week except Sunday from 06:00 to 16:30. Thursday has 13:00 closing.

Camden Market

Camden Market is one of London's top attractions and is home to a vibrant ‘alternative’ scene. Virtually everything is on sale here, clothing, music, antiques, collectibles, ethnic art, rugs, food and drink. There are a number of separate markets – at the lock, on the canal, under the railway arches towards Chalk Farm – the “stables”, Inverness Street and Buck Street, as well as Camden High Street itself. These markets are open nearly all year round.

Borough Market

Only a stone's throw from Great Dover Street Apartments, Borough is one of London's trendiest markets and has wonderful unspoilt Victorian architecture. Often used as a film location, on Saturdays there's a large farmer's market Producers from all over the country bring a range of fresh produce to the market, including; fish, meats, vegetables, ciders, cheeses, breads, coffees, cakes and patisseries.
Other stalls specialise in produce imported from abroad. Fruit wholesale 04:00-08:00 Mon - Fri. Farmers' Market 1200-1700 on Friday, 1000-1600 on Saturday.

The Number 11 Bus

An excellent tour of London can be taken for minimal cost on the Number 11 bus. A single journey should cost £1.50, or if you wish to hop on and off, a day travel card can be bought for £3.00. Catch the Number 11 from Liverpool Street Station, and you will be taken on the following route: Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fleet Street, The Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand and the Theatre district, Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Whitehall, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, New Scotland Yard, Westminster Cathedral, Victoria Station, Buckingham Palace Road, King’s Road Chelsea, and Fulham Broadway.
