Walk to Work Day
Benefit yourself and the environment by walking a little further than you usually do on your way to work. If you are up to it and don't live too far away try walking the whole distance. You will find it even more enjoyable if you can include a park or two on your route.
Walking home from work also counts if you are pushed for time in the morning, but we have deliberately chosen one of the longest days of the year so that you will have plenty of daylight all the way.
The prizes for walking are a great sense of achievement and well being and if you do it regularly possible weight loss and improved health.
What would be great would be if we could beat last year's totals.
The prize for the best departmental effort is a bouquet of flowers.

The department with the most walkers has been the Conference and Time Tabling Services Office with 10 participants. How many can your department muster? Have you thought of all meeting at a particular tube station and walking in from there?
Get yourselves sponsored, this year's chosen charity is Connection, a local charity for the homeless.
The record for the longest walk is still held by Johnathan Stirling of Equality and Diversity who walked 10 miles the previous year.
Calories burned and carbon saved are estimates to a certain extent as it depends on the the speed of the walk and the size of the walker, but to work these things out for any walking you do in London go to www.walkit.com
Have a go.
Why not get your department organised. Can you beat 10? It doesn't matter if you can't, everyone who enters can feel proud of themselves and know that they have made a small contribution to their own health and lessened their carbon footprint.
And if you do it once and enjoy it, why not do it again, and again?

Comments
Not everybody chose to send in a comment, but there were no unfavourable ones. Here are a selection from previous years:
Johnathan Sterling (see above) enjoyed it so much that he is now taking the tube part of the way home and jogging alongside canals for the rest of his journey.
- Thanks for encouraging us all to walk to work today.
- It felt good to walk the whole distance
- I seemed to arrive by foot quicker than anticipated, almost quicker than the underground. Nice to see the sights of London
- I will continue to do so (walk) instead of (taking) the bus
- Really nice way to start the day weather permitting
- I really enjoyed the walk and passed through areas I hadn't seen before, it was great and I plan to do it again!
