A fitter healthier lifestyle

Some easy changes you can make

Changing your lifestyle doesn't have to be difficult or expensive.
Here are a few things you can try that in the long term will lead to a fitter healthier you.

Easy lifestyle changes

  • use the stairs instead of lifts or escalators
  • walk to the shops instead of taking your car
  • if you must take the car, park a little further away and walk the rest
  • if you travel by bus get off one stop early
  • think about trying that if you travel by train
  • increase your fruit and vegetable intake
  • decrease your sugar and saturated fat intake
  • consume at least two litres of liquid per day (this can be in any form including the liquid in your food, but avoid sugary drinks and alcohol and if you drink tea or coffee you may need more as these de-hydrate the body)
  • consider one meat free day per week. This will help your health and the environment at the same time.

Exercise tips

  • Exercise doesn't have to, indeed shouldn't, leave you exhausted
  • All physical activity is exercise so gardening, walking the dog, playing with the children and etc all count - vary your exercise to maintain interest
  • Try to get yourself breathing a little more heavily and your heart pumping just a little faster for 30 minutes 5 times a week
  • Regular exercise helps to reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, coronary heart disease and many more
  • Exercise releases endorphins which can lift your mood and help fight depression
  • If you are going to start an exercise programme after a long period of inactivity consult your Doctor
