Sportsgrounds

Introduction

The College operates three outdoor sports facilities for student and staff use. Student teams use these grounds to represent the College at rugby, football, hockey, netball, lacrosse, and cricket in the various competitions organised by the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) and University of London Union (ULU).

All of the grounds are used by their local communities; schools and small sports clubs being the main external users.

New Malden

The largest of these grounds is located in Surrey, at New Malden which is accessible by main line train services from Waterloo Station. The nearest station is Berrylands, which is a short walk away from the ground. This ground is largely used by students representing the non-medical schools of the College, and playing under the banner of "King's". It is also heavily used by local clubs, schools and community groups.

Brockley Rise (HOP) & The Griffin

The remaining two sportsgrounds are located closer to the main College campuses. These are The Griffin in Dulwich and Brockley Rise HOP in Lewisham. Both of these grounds are served by main line train services from London Bridge Station, which makes them a popular location for city based companies wishing to hold sports or social days.

The main College use of these grounds is by students from the medical schools of the College, who play under the banner of "KCLMS" in BUCS, ULU and Hospitals' Cup competitions.
The Brockley Rise (HOP) sportsground re-opened in September 2009 following improvements to the facilities.

Management of the sportsgrounds

The sportsground facilities are managed locally, and are co-ordinated by the College's Sportsgrounds Manager; there is close and invaluable co-operation with the King's College London Students' Union. The Sub Committee for Fitness and Sport (which reports through the Directorate of Services for Students  to College Council) as well as encouraging Healthy Lifestyles throughout the College, provides an opportunity for student representatives and ground managers to reflect and consult upon operational issues.
