Jennifer Altehenger obtained her BA in Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge and her doctorate from the Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Heidelberg in 2010. From 2010 to 2011, she was a nine-month departmental lecturer in Modern Chinese History at the History Faculty, University of Oxford and Merton College. Before arriving at King’s, Jennifer was an An Wang postdoctoral fellow at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, Harvard University.
Whenever possible, Jennifer travels to China to look for archival sources and spend time learning new things about China’s past. Her main research interest lies in the intersection of social, cultural and legal history of modern and contemporary China. She is currently completing a book manuscript, which examines law propaganda and the dissemination of popular legal knowledge through mass campaigns in the People’s Republic of China. Further projects include articles on popular dictionaries and the politics of language, socialist interior design, political satire, and jurist networks in the 1950s and after.
