Strategic University partners

University of Sao Paulo

The University of Sao Paulo (USP) is a pre-eminent Latin American university, the largest institution dedicated to higher education and research in Brazil and ranked top in South America according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-12.

USP is composed of seven campuses, 40 learning and research units, five hospitals, five museums, five specialized institutes as well as multiple experimental laboratories and centres of scientific and cultural diffusion. With approximately 700 regular courses in more than 3,400 disciplines, USP is a sprawling hub of academic activity.

School and departmental links throughout the College have created a foundation for a strong and multi-dimensional partnership between USP and King’s which will enhance research collaboration and offer unique opportunities to faculty and students.

In the last few years, bilateral agreements settled between King’s and the Sao Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP (the state of Sao Paulo funding agency for science and technology) have increased opportunities for financial support and boosted new partnerships.

Over the past two years, fifteen new research projects involving King's staff have been granted with funds from FAPESPE (some of them together with the UK Research Councils) for the development of collaborative work with research teams in the state of Sao Paulo, nine among them with USP partners, covering areas such as: human health, genomics, nanotechnology and philosophy. A joint PhD in International Relations is expected to launch in 2012.

King’s offers an annual Partnership Award to the University of São Paulo (USP) that enables a member of USP staff to spend time at King’s. King’s welcomed Maria Hermínia Tavares de Almeida during January / February 2012, as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow. Maria is Professor of International and Political Science at the University of São Paulo, and President of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). Her research interests cover public policy, state and government, and comparative politics.
