Description

The 'Anglo-Saxon' world map in Cotton Tiberius B.V: sources and analogues

This paper will introduce the map's manuscript context, explore its known and possible sources, including Orosius' Histories against the Pagans, the Cosmographia of Aethicus Ister, and Priscian's translation of the Periegesis of Dionysius of Alexandria, and finally ask how 'Anglo-Saxon' it actually is.

Dr Alfred Hiatt is reader in Medieval English Literature at Queen Mary, University of London.
