Athens Dialogues conference contribution

November 2010 Professor Roddy Beaton, Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature, recently contributed to the Athens Dialogues, an International Conference on Culture and Civilization organised by the Onassis Foundation. The conference was webcast to many institutions around the world, including King’s. You can watch Professor Beaton’s lecture on the Athens Dialogues website (under ‘Archived Presentations’, scroll to ‘Stories and Histories part B’ and Professor Beaton gives his lecture ‘From Ancient to Modern: Byron, Shelley and the Idea of Greece at 57:20). The dialogues received a great deal of interest from the media, and Professor Beaton gave two half-hour interviews for two different TV channels, in Greek. He has also a recorded an hour-long radio programme about his career, interest in Greece, and related opinions for Greek National Radio.

Stavros S Niarchos Scholars' Fund 2011

September 2010 We are delighted to announce a scholarship to the value of £30,000 per year for a maximum of three years. The award will support doctoral research on any aspect of Hellenic Studies, carried out in either the Department of Classics or the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies.  This generous award has been made possible by the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation.

The Katie Lentakis Memorial Fund Award

June 2010 The Katie Lentakis Memorial Fund Award was made to the final year BA Ancient History student, Petros Bouras-Vallianatos for his dissertation on 'Alexander of Tralles on epilepsy: a commentary'. The presentation took place at 18.00 on Monday 28 June 2010 in the Council Room, King's College London.

Future of Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies

March 2010 On 25 March 2010, Greek National Day, King’s College London announced plans to enhance its Centre for Hellenic Studies by significantly broadening the scope of its activities to include for the first time teaching as well as research.  Under the new arrangements, the Centre for Hellenic Studies will incorporate the Department of Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies, including its staff. Students will be registered in the Centre and it will be able to run its own teaching programmes.
