We are an expanding department with a huge range of research and teaching interests from the Anglo Saxon to the contemporary. Our research feeds, at all times, into our teaching, and the courses we offer. All members of the department are actively engaged in cutting edge research; many are world leaders in their particular field. 70% of our research was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
Staff in the English Department are engaged in large-scale, collaborative research projects, as well as multi-volume scholarly editions of single authors. We have an excellent track record of attracting funding from the AHRC, the Leverhulme Trust, the British Academy, and the Wellcome Trust.
The department places great emphasis on exchanging research ideas and hosts a variety of research seminars and conferences (often in collaboration with other departments in the College or outside institutions), and is home to a thriving community of graduate students, with their own online journal, Stet, and research seminar series, ‘the abstract’.
