Events in Film Studies

The Film Studies department hosts a range of events throughout the academic year and also co-hosts collaborative events at BFI Southbank.

The Cinémathèque screenings on Monday and Tuesday evenings are a particular highlight and make use of the newly refurbished Arthur and Paula Lucas Lecture Theatre (S-2.18). Unless otherwise noted, films are screened on 35mm and non-English films are subtitled. Supported by the College and with invaluable assistance from the Strand campus audio-visual services team, we are one of the few Film Studies departments in the UK to offer the increasingly rare possibility of seeing celluloid films and comparing the way they look and feel with digital or video projection. We deem it essential to a Film Studies degree to be able to show students the different technologies of image production and projection and have also recently acquired a Betacam SP player with this belief in mind.

The department organized its first international conference in May 2006, on Eminent Europeans – the representation of famous Europeans in American cinema: part of research on the relationship between Europe and Hollywood. Since then, our international conferences have included: New Developments in Stardom (March 2008), Emergent Encounters in Film Theory (March 2009), Los Angeles in the Cinema (2009), the sixth Popular European Cinema Conference, on Melodrama (May 2010), the Europeanness of European Cinema (June 2010), New Generation Chinese Cinema (May 2011) and NECS (in collaboration with Birkbeck, June 2011).

Our well-attended series of research seminars in term time hosts internationally renowned senior scholars alongside leading junior colleagues, who share their most recent research with Film Studies MA and PhD students, along with post-doctoral researchers and staff.
