MA and PhD Supervision

Ben Schofield has supervised numerous MA/MRes and PhD dissertations, covering a broad range of topics: 19th century literature and history; 20th century literature, film, and art; and theories of cultural memory and political identity.

At PhD level, he is currently supervising the following thesis:

  • Kontinuität und Variation: Zum Geschichtsbild von Rudolf Alexander Schröder (Lyrik, Essayistik, Korrespondenz), 1878-1962

At MA level, he has supervised topics including:

  • 19th Century Austrian-American Relations: The Case of Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850)
  • German Reunification: Cultural Exchange and Identity Issues across the “Mauer im Kopf”
  • Trauma and Haunting in Sebald and Perec: Applying Derrida, Freud and Barthes
  • Sebald’s Gravestones: Derrida, Marx and the Responsibility of Memory
  • Sebald’s Nostalgia: Applying Boym
  • Public and Private Memoires in “La vita e bella” and “Das Leben der Anderen”
  • Ingo Schulze and Georg Baselitz: East-West Artistic Divides Before and After 1989

Ben Schofield also organises the PhD Graduiertenseminar in the Department, and runs the Joint-PhD Programme developed collaboratively between King’s College London, the University of Stuttgart, and the Sorbonne, Paris.
