Research interests

Representations of European revolution (1848) and German unification (1871); concepts of nation, identity, memory; censorship; Realism; post-1989 literature and film; the politics of memorialisation.
 

Educational and professional background

Ben Schofield originally studied German and Dutch at the University of Cambridge, before undertaking a Research Masters and PhD in Germanic Studies at the University of Sheffield, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. During his studies, he also researched at the Universities of München, Berlin and Passau (in Germany), and the University of Utrecht (in the Netherlands), with funds from the Association for German Studies. From 2007-08, he was Lecturer in Modern German Culture at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, part of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. In 2007-08 he also worked as Temporary Lecturer in Dutch at the University of Cambridge, where he continues to act as an Occasional Lecturer in German and Dutch. In 2008 he joined King’s College London as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in German and Comparative Literature, and in 2010 was appointed Lecturer in German.
