Majors and Minors

Portuguese

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is exclusively devoted to studying the Lusophone world and offers an unrivalled choice of modules in literature, cultural history and history and the opportunity to gain a high level of linguistic proficiency. Students majoring in Portuguese will have the opportunity to study abroad and immerse themselves in culture and society and achieve language fluency. 

Requirements

In order to major in Portuguese students must have taken Shifting Perspectives and Portuguese Language for Liberal Arts I in year 1.  Please note that the prerequisite for the language module is an A at A-level in Portuguese or equivalent.

In year 2, students must take 5AAPLIB2 Portuguese Language for Liberal Arts II and in year 3 students must take Core Portuguese (Advanced)

Option Modules

In year two, students must take 15 credits from the options modules listed below (each module is worth 15 credits):

In year 3, students must take 30 credits from the list below:

  • Modernity, Traditionalism & National Identity part II
  • Lusophone African Literature II
  • Luis de Camoes
  • Composition in Portuguese
  • Translation into English

Note: Modules may vary from year to year depending on staff availability.
