Wine tasting with Vivienne Franks

wineThe Modern Language Centre invites you to join us on one of our wine tasting workshops. Our expert wine educator, Vivienne Franks, will share her knowledge and enthusiasm for wine tasting.

The workshops take place at King's College Strand Campus at 7-9pm on the evenings listed below.

1. Introduction to ‘Wine Tasting Technique’ with Food  - 10th Oct 2011 - £30 
Learn to taste like a wine professional, how to write a tasting note, and taste wines with different food flavours. This evening is aimed at new ‘Amateurs du Vin’ as well as a refresher session for wine connoisseurs.

2. Learning about grapes - Riesling and Malbec - 8th Nov 2011 - £30 
The Riesling grape is very versatile, it can make anything from a fresh and fruity dry white wine to a luscious and rich sweet white wine. The deep black Malbec grape makes a rich and fruity, full bodied red wine. We will try many different styles from around the world.

3. Christmas Sparkle – Champagne vs Sparkling Wines - 7th Dec 2011 - £35
Bubbles are needed for the Festive season. Would you choose Prosecco over Cava? Award winning English Sparkling wine or just go for Champagne? Join us to decide which Fizz is just pleasure in a glass…

4. Learning about grapes - Viognier and Grenache - 26th Jan 2012 - £30 
The Viognier grape has distinctive fruity characters and as a white wine has become more and more popular in recent years. The Grenache grape makes delightful rosé and intense red wine, it also works well as part of a blend. Join us to taste and learn about these grapes.

5. Does Organic Food & Wine matter? - 22nd Feb 2012 - £30
We see more and more articles about wines produced from organically grown grapes, and read about the health benefits of food grown by this method.
Come and taste and debate the pros and cons of organic food and wine production.

6. Wines from the Americas - 20th Mar 2012 - £30 
Tonight we will try wines from both indigenous and international grape varieties from North and South American producers. We will determine whether it is the grape variety or the regional characteristics that influence the final wine.

7. Which is best - Single Grape Variety or Blend? - 24th Apr 2012 - £30 
Wine lovers tend to form two camps: those who prefer wines made from one single grape variety and those who believe that the blend is better than each of the components. Tonight we will sample both types of wine. You decide which camp you belong to...

8. Wines from Central & Eastern Europe - 23rd May  2012
The wines from Switzerland, Hungary and Romania are rarely seen on supermarket shelves or restaurant wine lists. Come and try some really interesting grape varieties and wine styles, join those of us who love these lesser known wines.

9. Spanish Wines with Tapas - 21st Jun 2012
We all love to eat and drink. It is fashionable and trendy to snack on small dishes with appropriately matched wines. Tapas and Spanish wines are a natural combination. Come and taste some typical Spanish food and wine and rate these food and wine matches.
