Hindi Language Resources

hindi-carHindi is an Indo-Aryan language with about 487 million speakers. It is one of the 22 official languages of India and is the main language used in the northern states of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand.

Hindi Resources Catalogue
The PDF file contains all resources for Hindi that can be found in the Language Resources Centre. It is divided into 3 categories:

  • Audio CD/DVD
  • Films/TV

In the 'Notes' column you will find details of, for example, CDs that accompany textbooks and vice versa. Other information had been included throughout the catalogue to help identify a specific item if viewing these off-site.

A Door into Hindi
This website is suitable for beginner students. It includes 24 video-based lessons with accompanying scrolling texts, grammar notes, glossaries, cultural notes etc.

Hindi Script Tutor
This website provides a character-drawing programme with the script.

Digital Dialects - Hindi vocabulary builder
Not written in Devanagari but good for basic vocabulary. The vocabulary is accompanied with an audio version of the words.


Learn Hindi word games
Thematic vocabulary list with exercises such as hangman etc.


Advanced Hindi
This website offers prose, poetry and culture.

Indian Cinema: VOD YouTube
Wide range of full Indian films uploaded by YouTube. Some have English subtitles, some don't. Examples of films with English subtitles:
Teen Patti; Vivah; Red Swasik; main Prem ki Diwani Hoon; Shaadi no.1; Yaadein; etc.
Example of films without subtitles:
3 idiots; Pyar Impossible; Action Replay; Hum Aaapke hain koun; Hum saath hain; Pardes; etc.
