Undergraduates at the Modern Language Centre

Free courses

The Modern Language Centre offers King’s undergraduate students the opportunity to take free assessed language modules (see below for conditions).

Special rates

If you want to take an assessed module which doesn’t count towards your degree there are special King’s student rates.

 King’s students also get generous discounts on Lunchtime, Evening, Saturday and Summer Language Courses. 

Assessed modules

What is on offer?
  • 14 languages available in 2017-18
  • Available at complete beginner stage 1 to advanced stage 7 (language dependent)
  • Can be taken as part of a King’s degree programme where permitted by the programme regulations (‘for award)’ or separately (‘not for award’)
  • Many full-year modules starting in September; some one-semester modules starting in September; a few one-semester modules starting in January

 What are you committing to?

  • Full-year modules:
    • 2 taught hours per week for 20 weeks (10 weeks each in semester 1 & 2)
    • 4 to 8 hours of self-study per week
  • One-semester modules:
    • 3 taught hours per week for 10 weeks
    • 1 hour of e-learning per week
    • 8 to 10 hours of self-study per week
  • Serious academic language study leading to 15 credits at credit level 4, 5 or 6
  • Two compulsory assessments: oral exam & written exam
  • Minimum attendance requirement of 75%
  • Results are on King’s student records system

Lunchtime Language Courses

  • Focused on conversation
  • Substantial discount for King’s students (45% in 2016-17)
  • Starting in October, January & April
  • One 50-minute lesson per week for 10 weeks
  • No exams

Evening, Saturday and Summer Language Courses

  • Substantial discount for King’s students (45% in 2016-17)
  • 23+ languages available in 2017-18
  • Available at complete beginner level 1 to advanced level 6 (varies per language)
  • Speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar
  • No formal assessments or exams
  • Starting in October, January, April & July
  • Each level has 3 parts with 15 hours of teaching per part
  • Enrol for 1, 2 or 3 parts

 How many lessons are there in a course? 

  • Evening Language Courses: 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks (15 hours)
  • Saturday Language Courses: 3 hours per week for 5 weeks (15 hours)
  • Fast-track Summer Language Courses: 6 hours per week for 2.5 weeks (15 hours)
  • Intensive Summer Language Courses: 15 hours in 1 week
