Pre-requisite: 60 credits in history
An introduction to the methods of musicological research culminating in a special study. The focus of this module is the preparation of a research essay of c.10,000 words in length. The early part of the module concentrates on trends in contemporary musicology, ways of selecting your own topic, controlling the bibliography, and methods of research and criticism. The aims then shift to presentation, communication and style, with the majority of the work undertaken by the student in consultation with her/his supervisor.
Assessment: Dissertation (7,000-10,000 words) = 100%
Teaching pattern: The module will be taught via ten one-hour lectures and
6 hours of individual supervision.
