The annual Mark Sainsbury alumni lecture
Each year since 2009, the Department has welcomed a prestigious guest speaker to deliver a one-off lecture in honour of Mark Sainsbury, former Susan Stebbing Professor of Philosophy in the Department, to which all of our alumni are invited.
The lecture is always followed by a drinks reception in the Department, which is an excellent opportunity to catch up with other alumni, current students and, of course, the staff!
We hope very much that many of you will be able to join us for what is always a very special evening!
The Department is very grateful to donors to the Mark Sainsbury Fund without whom this lecture would not be possible.
The Mark Sainsbury Lecture 2012
The Department of Philosophy, King’s College London requests the pleasure of your company at the fourth Mark Sainsbury Lecture
G a p s
by Professor Peter Adamson (King’s College London)
"In Platonism there is a problem, already identified by Plato himself: if there are more than one kind of thing (e.g. Forms and particulars), then how can our grasp of one relate to our grasp of the other? For instance, if we use sensation to grasp sensible things, and intellect to grasp intelligible things, isn't there a gap between these two kinds of cognition, which makes it hard to see how one could contribute to the other? The lecture will pursue this question of an 'epistemic gap', beginning with Plato, and looking at key figures in the late ancient and Islamic Platonic traditions."
