Students are reassessed in the failed elements of assessment and by the same methods as the first attempt.

Facts and Values in Historical Context is a text-based, historical course concentrating on ways in which metaphysical problems concerning values - especially moral values - have been treated in the Western philosophical tradition.

Module aims

The module will help students to:

  • develop their abilities to interpret, synthesise and criticise complex texts and positions;
  • present and critically assess ideas orally and in writing in a clear and rigorous way;
  • develop their group presentation skills;
  • undertake, with appropriate guidance, independent work, including identifying and using appropriate resources.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, the students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practicable skills appropriate to a Level 6 module and in particular will be able to demonstrate an advanced ability to:

  • analyse texts and arguments (including the use of formal techniques).
  • summarise and present arguments.
  • research, plan and present essays to specified deadlines.
  • an understanding of how contemporary epistemology develops out of the philosophical tradition, and of the various possible forms of a prominent approach to epistemology.
