Biography

Prof Elton got her PhD in 1988 from the Universidad de Navarra (Spain) with a thesis on the pure love in Fenelon analyzed in the context of the modern moral philosophy of Rousseau and Kant. The following year she joined the Philosophy Institute of the Universidad de los Andes (Chile) as Director of Studies, post which she held for twelve years while teaching and researching in Moral Philosophy until today. Her interest in this area has focused on the operations of practical reason and their interplay with passions and the will in a virtuous person. She has also worked on some topics of natural law. Her research on these subjects has been inspired by Thomas Aquinas, Kant and some prominent philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment, as David Hume, Adam Smith and Thomas Reid.  She is currently working on a research project, financed by Fondecyt, a Chilean State Research Fund, about the metaphysics of free will in Thomas Reid and its impact on the philosophical contemporary discussion.
