Funding opportunities for postgraduate students
There are a number of ways in which you can obtain financial support to help you through your postgraduate studies. The College Fees & Funding pages contain plenty of information about financing your postgraduate studies, including Scholarships that may be open to you. Many of these competitions are open to students across the School, but there are also a number of awards specifically for students in the Department of Philosophy.
Follow the links below for details of funding opportunities for current or prospective postgraduate students in the Department.
If you are a current or potential graduate student seeking funding for your studies you are strongly encouraged to consult the Graduate School's funding database for a complete list of the opportunities that may be open to you.

Department Travel bursaries
The Department is able to offer travel grants of up to a maximum of £250 to any research student (MPhilStud or PhD) who is invited to present a paper at a conference or workshop. There are also limited funds available to help research students attend conferences or workshops even when not invited to present a paper; applications under this heading will be assessed on their merits.
Only one research trip per student per year can be supported.
The Department is able to offer this to PhD students up to six months after their viva.
Application for these grants should be made in advance to the Chair of the Postgraduate and Research Committee (PARC), Professor Mark Textor.
NB Students seeking these grants must show that they have also applied for any alternative sources of funding which might support their travel.
Hardship fund
In order to help Graduate students who find themselves in acute financial difficulties due to a clearly identified financial emergency, the department has decided to introduce an Emergency Fund:
-
MAX £500 for a specific financial emergency (as opposed to medium to long term financial struggling);
-
only one claim possible over the duration of studies and on the understanding that other sources have been tried (e.g. College Hardship fund); if granted, the student will not be eligible for that year for a departmental travel bursary;
-
claims to be assessed by HoD, Chair of PARC (Mark Textor) and Resource Officer (David Papineau);
-
due to its nature of emergency fund there is no fixed deadline.
Please note that this is coming directly from departmental funds and that our budget is very limited. Moreover, this fund is in addition to our bursaries which are also directly financed by the department or by generous gifts by friends of the department.
