How are assessments marked

It is important that all students are aware of the marking criteria used by academics to mark assessments.  

The marking criteria below provide guidance on the overall standards expected at different grade bands.

How is my work marked?

King’s is committed to an assessment process that is fair, equal and transparent and your work is therefore marked in accordance with the College Marking Framework.

All assignments will be given a percentage mark. The pass mark for an undergraduate level assignment is 40%; for postgraduate taught level work it is 50%. Assignments will be assessed on the basis of understanding, depth of knowledge and structure.

Each department has created discipline-specific guidance for markers and students to understand how Faculty marking criteria are applied in a particular discipline or type of assessment. These guides can be found below and also include links to any approved discipline specific marking criteria:

You should also take note of modules taken outside of the Faculty and refer to the relevant departments guidelines on assessment. 

Who marks my work (Exam/Assessment Boards)?

Any staff member involved in marking your work will have the appropriate experience and expertise. 

Assessment Boards are responsible for ensuring examinations and assessment procedures under their remit are carried out in accordance with College regulations and other regulations governing the programme. All marks on assignments are provisional until approved by the relevant Assessment Board.

External Examiners

External Examiners are appointed to ensure the quality and standard of awards on each programme. The External Examiners are experienced examiners who are academics at other institutions in the same subject area as the programme. They ensure that assessment processes are fair, rigorous and operated equitably. 

You can find out who the External Examiners are for your Programme via details of the assessment board membership.  Students are not allowed to make direct contact with external examiners, especially with regard to individual performance in assessments.
