Making registration changes

Changes of status - BA programmes

We hope that you enjoy your chosen programme of study but sometimes problems arise that necessitate changes during your time with us.

If you are experiencing difficulties you should talk to your Personal Tutor before completing the necessary online form and submitting a request.  It is also advisable to talk to the Student Advice Team in The Compass if you are considering an interruption of study, transfer or a withdrawal from a programme.

Students studying at King's under a Tier 4 Visa must contact the Student Advice & International Support Office for advice and to ask them to confirm that you are eligible to make the change under the terms of your visa.

In Philosophy, the Department Education Lead will need to approve any changes to registration status.

Changing modules

You will be required to register for modules for both semesters either:

  • For your first year, before you arrive in September (if you are a combined honours student; single honours students follow a compulsory curriculum for their entire first year); or
  • For your second and third years, in the Spring of your first/second year (as appropriate) via Student Records.

Sometimes you might find that a particular choice turns out not to suit you as well as you thought it might. It is possible to request to change modules once the programme is underway at the beginning of the module’s teaching term, however, there are strict deadlines for submitting these requests.

You may like to discuss your intentions with your Personal Tutor or the Department Education Lead first.

Please consult the Handbook for further guidance on submitting a module change request.

Changing seminars

You should be available for classes throughout the College’s teaching week (specified in the College Timetabling Policy). The College endeavours to ensure that the timetable is released sufficiently in advance of the commencement of teaching to assist students in making appropriate arrangements.

We will facilitate changes in your seminar group allocations when you have a timetable clash between classes on modules which count towards your award, or have accessibility needs (for example disabled access to a seminar room).

In some other exceptional circumstances we will allow you to switch between seminar groups on a module. This is permitted on the following grounds:

  • Responsibilities as a carer or parent
  • Recurring medical appointments
  • Religious observance
  • Commitments to an employer already entered into before seminar groups are published, and which cannot be easily altered (we will ask for evidence of this)

Any moves between seminar groups can only be made where constraints permit it, and it is not guaranteed that you will be able to change.

To change your seminar group, please use the Seminar Group Change Request Form.

The strict deadline for receipt of seminar change requests is 17.00 on Friday of the second week of the module’s teaching (i.e. in Semester 1 for full-year modules).

Changing programmes (outgoing or internal transfer)

If you decide that your programme is not for you, it may be possible to change programmes, either to another programme in the Department (i.e. to change from single to combined honours, or vice versa), or to a programme offered by another department.

You must first discuss your intentions with your Personal Tutor  or the Department Education Lead.

If you are thinking of changing programmes, however, you should be advised that the window for doing this is very short at the start of the academic year. Most programmes have very strict requirements on the modules you must complete to satisfy the requirements of the degree and it is often not possible to switch to a new programme after the first or second week of term. You will only be able to join a programme if it has available student places.

Changes of programme are not typically practicable part-way through the year. However, if you are keen to change, it may be possible for you to interrupt your studies and re-join the first year of another programme in the next academic year.

Your Programme AdministratorPersonal Tutor and/or the Department Education Lead will be able to advise you on the practicalities of any programme change request, each of which are considered individually.

If you decide to proceed with a change to your programme, you will need to complete the online “Student Change of Circumstances” form, which is available from Student Records.  Further information can be found with Registry Services.

Please note that changing your programme may also require you to amend your module choices, and you must ensure that you provide the details of the modules you will be undertaking when you complete the online form.

Changing programmes (incoming transfer to Philosophy)

The Department of Philosophy at King's will generally not consider applications for transfer after the first two weeks of teaching of the academic year. All applications must be approved by the Admissions Tutor for undergraduate programmes.

Interrupting your studies

Occasionally students will find that they need to take a substantial break from their programme of study. It is possible to take an interruption of studies, normally for a period of one calendar year, or to the beginning of the next academic year. As far as the programme is concerned everything will stop and then you will re-commence your studies where you left them. It is best if you can do this when there is a natural break in the programme: for instance, in between academic years. However, there are times when situations like an illness cannot be predicted and in these cases we will try to support you as best as we can.

The range of available modules and their syllabi often change from year to year, so you may come back to a different landscape from the one around which you had initially been formulating your plans around.

In the first instance you must discuss your intentions with the Department Education Lead.

If you decide to proceed, you will need to complete the online “Student Change of Circumstances” form, which is available from Student Records.  Further information can be found with Registry Services

Withdrawing

Occasionally students choose to withdraw from their programme of study and although we do not want to see you leave we will support you through this decision.

Please do not just disappear without telling anyone. If you do not formalise your withdrawal from the College you will still be liable to pay full tuition fees.

In the first instance you must discuss your intentions with the Department Education Lead.

If you decide to proceed with a permanent withdrawal from the College, you will need to complete the online “Student Change of Circumstances” form, which is available from Student Records.  Further information can be found with Registry Services
