Postgraduate research programmes

Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) scheme

As part of its commitment to providing opportunities for research students to gain teaching and marking experience in the course of their doctoral studies, useful for future job applications, the Department of Philosophy offers a number of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) positions each year, in various subject areas covered by the Department at undergraduate level.

The Graduate Teaching Assistant Scheme is designed to enable research students and recent doctoral graduates of the Department to lead discussion groups and/or contribute to marking, within a structure of supervision by the module co-ordinator, that also offers training and support.

As a GTA you will need to be prepared to:

  • Lead a weekly tutorial of about 15 students
  • Be prepared for each session by being acquainted with core reading for the module as a whole, and where appropriate attending lectures relevant to the seminars (unpaid)
  • Mark formative essays promptly and return feedback to students
  • Answer student emails
  • Fill in short report forms
  • Monitor student attendance, and report persistent absenteeism to the department.
  • Liaise closely with module tutor and accept direction
