2017-18

  • Summative assessment: one two-hour exam (100%)
  • Formative assessment: two 1,500–2,000-word essays

2016-17

  • Summative assessment: one two-hour exam (100%)
  • Formative assessment: two 1,500–2,000-word essays

Students are reassessed in the failed elements of assessment and by the same methods as the first attempt.

Teaching pattern: one one-hour weekly lecture and one one-hour weekly seminar over ten weeks.

This module aims to provide an understanding of the central problems of contemporary Philosophy of Medicine. The specific problems under consideration might typically include: biological accounts of health and disease; health as a natural value; introspection and knowledge of bodily states.

This module aims to provide an understanding of the central problems of contemporary Philosophy of Medicine.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, the students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practicable skills appropriate to a level-7 module and in particular will be able to demonstrate that they have:

  • a textually-referenced knowledge of the main problems of contemporary Philosophy of Medicine
  • the ability to deploy the philosophical techniques and argumentative strategies that can be used to discuss those problems
  • the transferable skill of formulating and evaluating arguments both for and against various other kinds of philosophical positions
  • an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of some problems that arise in the practice of medicine
