Module description

The module examines samples from an important body of writing by men from the late fourteenth to the mid-fifteenth centuries that are concerned with the nature of woman. Many of the notions that appear in such texts are by no means only relevant to the Middle Ages, but are still in circulation; in this way they cast much light on current underlying attitudes to women.

After studying the general background to this kind of writing, the module looks closely at how the discourses of misogyny and defence were worked out in several fifteenth and early sixteenth century texts, some of them major literary achievements like Arcipreste de Talavera , Bernat Mete’s Lo somni (Sueño) or Celestina, and other much less well known but equally illuminating.
