Dr Pacheco Pardo’s is currently engaged in three main research projects. The first one examines the political economy of East Asia from a comparative perspective. The focus of this project is on the similarities and differences between the financial markets and government monetary and fiscal policies of different East Asian countries. Dr Pacheco Pardo seeks to explain how and why markets behave differently from each other across East Asia and with respect to those in Western countries. Concurrently, he wants to ascertain how the policies of different governments in East Asia affect their respective domestic markets as well as economic dynamics in the region.
His second main research project studies Northeast Asian international relations, with special emphasis on economic and security cooperation. Dr Pacheco Pardo analyses how regionalism through institutions such as the China-Japan-South Korea Trilateral Summit, the Six-Party Talks and the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation can foster better relations in the region. He aims to ascertain whether regionalism can create sustainable, peaceful relations in Northeast Asia. In addition, this project will eventually examine whether links between regionalism and regionalization in Northeast Asia exist and, if they do, how and why they can reinforce each other to foster a more stable environment in the region.
The third main research project Dr Pacheco Pardo is developing focuses on actual and possible cooperation between the EU and East Asia. He focuses on how the EU can enhance cooperation with countries such as China, Japan and South Korea on areas in which a common foreign security policy can be said to exist, such as non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This project aims at showing the similarities and differences between the policies of the EU and selected East Asian countries in terms of objectives and implementation, with the goal of highlighting areas in which enhanced cooperation is possible.
