Why Jewish Studies?

A great attraction of Jewish Studies is its diversity. So numerous are its subjects and approaches that Jewish Studies has the rare distinction of being interdisciplinary all by itself.

Whether you would like to specialise in an area of Jewish Studies but are not sure where to focus, or already decided to expand systematically your expertise in one of our core areas (such as Biblical Studies, Rabbinics, Jewish-Christian and Jewish-Muslim relations, or contemporary Jewish Thought), you will find a vibrant, supportive, and intellectually inspiring framework in the three institutions participating in this MA programme: King's is co-operating with the London School of Jewish Studies, and with Leo Baeck College.

Our MA programme is a place where students and scholars combine the study of Jewish sources from antiquity to the modern period with intense explorations of their significance for issues and debates in contemporary contexts. The programme has also developed a specific focus on Jewish-Christian, Jewish-Muslim and Jewish-secular interactions and their relevance for multi-religious and multi-cultural societies.

In short, the programme has become a forum for students and scholars of a wide range of Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds who work together, initiate new projects and cooperate with other departments and institutions at King's, in London and beyond.

Why at King's?

Here in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies, King's has drawn outstanding scholars from all over the world to teach key aspects of the three 'Abrahamic religions', Judaism, Christianity, and Islam: their histories, social contexts, material cultures, philosophies, practices, and the texts they hold sacred. If you like the idea of pursuing a specialised postgraduate degree in Jewish Studies in the context of a department immersed in these three world religions and their interaction, located in the city that is home to Britain’s largest Jewish community and to many libraries, museums, and institutions of historical and contemporary Jewish interest, King’s may be for you.

We offer excellent teaching, stimulating encounters with teachers and fellow students, and the chance to discuss innovative research with leading scholars in the field within the framework of our Jewish Studies research seminar and international workshops.

How do I apply?

Our MA in Jewish Studies is available as a full-time one-year degree, or a two-year part-time degree. Successful candidates will have an undergraduate degree, usually but not necessarily in a humanities subject.

Just follow the link to the "Online Prospectus" in the right column for further information on the application process.

Students who register for this MA through the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) are invited to contact Dr Tamra Wright (twright@lsjs.ac.uk) to discuss the LSJS pathway through the MA.
