King’s hosts an open day on ‘Drugs and Forensics’ for London Schools
On the 16th March 2011, we held an Open Day for year 12 pupils, entitled ‘Drugs and Forensics’ on the Guy’s Campus of King’s. This event was designed, not only to show the science behind the high quality teaching and research that goes on at King’s, but to enthuse pupils into a career in Biomedical Science.
Approximately 60 pupils and teachers attended from the Harris Federation of south London schools. Shona Findlay, the Consultant Leader for Science for the Federation, expressed how excited the pupils were at the prospect of coming to King’s to learn more about drugs and forensics.
The day consisted of a lunch time talk on the history of some well known drugs, such as aspirin, codeine and heroin, followed by two fully hands on forensics workshops. One of these involved forensic microscopy to identify clothes fibres from ‘the guilty suspect’ and the other was a case study where the pupils had to analyse mock case involving identification of blood a forensic exhibit.
The day finished with a privileged visit to King’s Gordon museum, an anatomy museum with the largest collection of specimens in the UK, and a talk by the curator on the truth behind forensic medicine. The pupils will never again watch programmes such as CSI in the same way again!
Moreover, throughout the day the pupils were exposed to experiences and equipment that they would never have access to in their school environment, really allowing us to outreach with what we are able to do at King’s.
King’s hosts further joint seminars with the Forensic Science Society
Following the two recent guest lectures in which The Right Honourable Lord Justice Leveson and Professor David Ormerod (The Law Commissioner) addressed the problems and solutions of provision of expert evidence in the criminal courts, King’s and the Forensic Science Society have announced a series of three specialist seminars.
These seminars have been designed to be both informative and interesting to students, practicing forensic scientists and legal professionals alike, and are CPD accredited. Further details of the seminars are provided below:
