Forensic science research

The cost of crime in England and Wales exceeds £60 bn p/a

Forensic science has the potential to deliver significant reductions in both the cost and impact of crime in the UK, through more effective detection of crime, delivery of efficiency savings in the investigation of crime, and effective presentation of robust evidence in Court.

We at King’s believe that in order to maximise the contribution and value delivered to the Criminal Justice System (CJS) by forensic science, research in this field must address important elements of the forensic process. Correspondingly, our current research programme is focussed on five main themes, each of which delivers improvement to critical aspects of the forensic process, its operation and the public perception of forensic science.

Our five research themes are:

  • Improved location, recovery and analysis of forensic evidence
  • Development of new methods and instrumentation for forensic analysis
  • Toxicology
  • Computer forensics
  • Ethical issues associated with use and public governance of forensic technologies
