Researchers at King’s College London have discovered how one of the most common household painkillers works, which could pave the way for less harmful pain relief medications to be developed in the future.

Researchers at King’s College London have found a molecule in the body which controls sensitivity to pain from UVB irradiation, identifying it as a new target for medicines to treat pain caused by other common inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

 

10 June 2011 Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship for Dr David Bennett
Dr David Bennett has been awarded a Senior Research Fellowship in Clinical Science from the Wellcome Trust. This is a £1.4 M award to support him and his team in studying the role Neuregulin-erbB signalling in injury and repair of the peripheral nervous system.

 

6 May 2011 Thomas A Sears, B.Sc., Ph.D., Hon FRCP
Congratulations to Tom Sears, Emeritus Professor in the Wolfson CARD, on the award of an Honorary Fellow from the Royal College of Physicians. Tom’s first reaction was that “this came out of the blue and I have no idea who initiated it but one factor may well have been my continuing activity in academia”. Tom’s enthusiasm for science, his presence at the bench, and his active participation in our seminar program is inspirational.

 

11 March 2011 MRC Senior Non-Clinical Fellowship awarded to Liz Bradbury
Dr Liz Bradbury has been awarded a very prestigious MRC Senior Fellowship to develop new treatments for spinal cord injury. The award is for £2.2M and will support her for 5 years.
