Themed Weeks

Media Week

Media Week 2012 took place from 27 February - 2 March 2012

Look out for Media Week 2013's dates and competitions on www.kcl.ac.uk/careers/events

Media Week is a week of events for King's students focusing on working in media. We organise talks, competitions and a panel & networking event with King's Alumni now working in the various media roles (see the profiles of this year's panel & networkers in the programme below).

Here's a few of the positive comments we received from students after this year's Media Week:

  • Presenters were very friendly, answered lots of questions well and spent lots of time addressing queries
  • Informative, helpful & realistic
  • Has made the next few steps I need to take much clearer
  • It makes looking for jobs / starting a career less abstract - reassuring experience

See the 2012 programme (below) for an idea of the diversity of career paths in media that the week covers.

Make a video: Help Me to See It! We hear about the impact of the financial crisis all the time.  The squeeze on jobs, the squeeze on incomes, the squeezed middle!  But how can you help people understand how we got here?  Sovereign defaults, CDOs, bank runs, stressed looking politicians.  Can you make a video that explains the financial crisis in 60 seconds and make it exciting and very visual?  If you can, you could win yourself a day inside the world’s number one business channel, CNBC in London.

Alumni Panel and Networkers

Stuart Cabb, Mechanical Engineering, 1988

After graduating from King’s, Stuart volunteered at Capital Radio which eventually led to a regular job.  What appeared to be a disastrous move to work at a bottom of the ladder satellite TV station eventually led to a job at the BBC and a life-changing opportunity. After 10 years in BBC Sport producing at three Olympic Games and two World Cups, Stuart began a long collaboration with BAFTA winning journalist Louis Theroux which produced many famous films.  In 2007 Stuart left to set up Plum Pictures. The company has built a strong reputation for innovation and high quality programming with the biggest names in the industry including James May (BAFTA nominated Toy Stories and Man Lab) for BBC2, Sir Trevor McDonald (Secret Caribbean and Mediterranean) for ITV1, Gok Wan Made in China for Channel 4, Party Paramedics for Channel 4 and Wayne Rooney’s Street Striker for Sky1 and many others.

Jonathan Maitland, Law, 1983

Jonathan Maitland started his career working in local newspapers and joined BBC local radio in 1985. He then reported for Radio 4’s Today for six years. In the mid 90s he reported for BBC Breakfast News before co-hosting ‘Watchdog’ with Anne Robinson, to audiences of 10 million.  Jonathan joined ITV in 1999 and presented the BAFTA nominated House of Horrors, about dodgy builders, for a decade, and he continues to present their flagship current affairs show Tonight (RTS Programme of the Year).  Jonathan hosted three other ITV1 shows: The Man In The Van, Package Holiday Undercover and late night political show Vote For Me.  He’s  written five  books including the best selling How To Make Your Million From The Internet (And What To Do If You Don’t), a biography of  the late Eva Cassidy; Flop Idol and the  political guidebook  Vote for …Who? and How to Survive Your Mother.  Jonathan has also written for all the UK’s leading newspapers.

Jonathan Stoneman, French, 1980

Jonathan was made redundant even before starting his first job after graduating in 1980. Eighteen months later he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and enjoyed postings to Warsaw and Budapest at the end of the Cold War. It was these postings and his contacts with journalists that made Jonathan want to switch career, and so, in 1990 he became a researcher at the BBC. Starting in TV, Jonathan went on to work at BBC World Service;  in the newsroom, on programmes such as Europe Today and the New Europe, and then as head of programmes in Macedonian and Croatian. After eight years as head of training at World Service, Jonathan decided to go freelance, and he is now working for himself as trainer, consultant and coach – mainly in the media business.

Alice Regent, History, History, 2010

Alice studied History at King’s and graduated with first class honours in 2010. Shortly after graduating, Alice started an internship with the British Museum’s Development Department. The Development team generates vital income from companies, individuals and trusts for a variety of projects across the Museum, from exhibitions and research to day-to-day running costs. After two weeks Alice took up a fixed term contract to co-ordinate the Museum’s Patron Membership programme, and is now employed as the Patrons and Stewardship Officer.  Alice acts as the main point of contact for the Patrons, and manages the administration of several groups who support specific curatorial departments in the Museum. She manages the delivery of membership benefits including private views of exhibitions and the annual Director’s Dinner. In 2011 she helped to organise a fundraising appeal to purchase a rare Cycladic male warrior figurine, raising over £85,000.

Rebecca Seal International Peace & Security MA, 2005

Rebecca Seal completed her BSc in International Relations at LSE and then joined King’s to complete a Masters in International Peace and Security. While at LSE, Rebecca got her first journalism job, a summer placement at the Evening Standard editing a supplement for school leavers. Rebecca also gained work experience at the Telegraph and Observer and paid work for the Independent and Standard while studying.  Halfway through her Masters, Rebecca got a job as editorial assistant on Observer Food Monthly (OFM) and stayed there for six years, latterly as both assistant editor on OFM and contributing editor on Observer Woman.  Rebecca left two years ago to go freelance and currently her clients are The Financial Times, Guardian, Observer, Times, Sunday Times, Glamour, Grazia, Zest and Top Sante. Rebecca edits the food pages in ES magazine every week and is the editor of a drinks magazine and a food magazine, both quarterly, for the Soho House Group of restaurants. www.rebeccaseal.co.uk

"Media Week was a really good way of getting to know about different jobs within the media and communications industry. All the lectures were informative and really gave me a sense of what it would be like to work in those jobs, and they are especially useful if you don't know what career path to take yet. Taking part in the competition was a fun way to get involved and doing the work experience was really valuble, plus it has enhanced my CV."

Ashley Neale, winner of the 2009 Advert Competition
