Advanced General Dental Practice MSc - Programme Outline

A modular programme which comprises of 5 modules; Primary Dental Care, Practice Management, Restorative Dentistry, Clinical Practice and a General Dental Practice research project dissertation.

Year 1

Module I: Primary Dental Care

The following topics are covered in this module:

  • Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Prevention of oral disease
  • Peridontology in general dental practice
  • Tooth preparation
  • Impressions and temporary restorations
  • Orthodontics and paedodontics in general practice

By the end of the module students will be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge and deep understanding of all areas pertinent to clinical practice at primary dental care settings. Students will learn how to recognise a dental or an oral disease and enable them to make differential diagnoses and proper treatment planning. During the face-to-face course students will also become competent in undertaking indirect restorations through hands-on training in tooth preparing and impression. Further units will help students in making diagnoses for orthodontic, paediatric dentistry and periodontal problems.

Module II: Practice Management

The following is a summary of the topics covered in this module:

  • Practice development
  • Managing a business
  • Managing a workforce
  • Ethics and law in dental practice
  • Quality management
  • Compliance

By the end of the module students will accumulate experience in all relevant areas of setting up and managing a dental practice; staff recruitment, staff development, managing staff in employment, compliance and quality assurance, according to local health authority rules and regulations. There is also a unit on ethics and law in dentistry which will increase awareness of the ethical issues and teach how to observe ethical codes of practice in day-to-day clinical practice.

Year 2

Module III: Restorative Dentistry

The following is a summary of the topics covered in this module:

  • Restoration of the endodontically treated tooth
  • Removable complete dentures
  • Occlusion and splint therapy
  • Toothwear
  • Treatment planning for fixed prosthodontics in the worn dentition
  • Treatment planning for implant restorations

By the end of this module students will acquire deep knowledge and experience in all aspects of restorative dentistry including endodontics, periodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics, occlusion and implantology.

Module IV: Clinical Practice

This module involves submission of case reports. The student must include ‘before’ and ‘after’ images in the digital format with supporting documentation.

(1) Case Reports - Long

The student will submit a minimum of four long documented cases (maximum 15 minutes video presentation per long case) from each of the following:

  1. Caries stabilisation cases
  2. Periodontal treatment with at least one follow-up session after a suitable time interval
  3. Fixed and removable prosthodontics case
  4. Endodontics cases
  5. Oral Surgery Cases
  6. Orthodontic cases

(2) Case Reports - Short

Students will submit an equivalent compendium of short cases on a theme (15 minute maximum video presentation, equivalent to 4 cases).

Alternatively if it is not possible to present a single case from start to finish a compendium of cases on a theme may be presented e.g. use of composite to restore the appearance of teeth.

Year 3

Final year report
Students will be required to carry out an approved project relating to a problem within the broad field of Advanced General Dental Practice. The report on this project must include a survey of the relevant literature, and be approximately 10,000 words in length excluding the bibliography, illustrations and appendices.
