Background to the scheme for supervisors and students:
The summer vacation studentship scheme is aimed at giving undergraduates between the second and third years of their degrees the opportunity to work in a research laboratory environment. Studentships typically last for between 8 and 10 weeks depdening upon the funding body from whom financial support is obtained. In the past, this training has proved particularly valuable to students that will go on to undertake a research project in their final year.
The process is as follows. Students should select potential projects/supervisors from amongst those on offer and arrange to meet the supervisor to discuss. If your favoured supervisor is not listed as offering a project this year, it might still be worth contacting them to raise the possibility anyway.
Once a supervisor has agreed to a particular student undertaking vacation work, the supervisor and student can then apply for funding from a number of sources (see below). N.B. funding cannot be sought by the supervisor without a named student. Also, if that student subsequently withdraws, funding is generally not transferable to another student.
