19. Why wasn’t there more press
coverage in 1953?
Despite the view widely held today that
the definition of DNA was a race and particular events were
dramatic, the real history of DNA is about undramatic,
painstaking work. King’s scientists’ work built on
that of others, as others built on theirs. When the papers in
Nature were published there was widespread excitement in the
scientific community but considerable work still lay ahead at
King’s to refine and test the hypothesis.
