The
answer to this question could be very long indeed and is certainly open
to argument. Early understanding of plant genetics and inherited characteristics
stand alongside an understanding about how light travels, can be separated
and diffracted, as key developments. The discovery of x-rays by Von
Roentgen was arguably the first key step in the list of discoveries
and innovations that led to the cracking of the code. Without x-rays
the key images of DNA could not have been taken.
