A new collection of essays on criminal justice edited by ICPS Director Rob Allen has been published by the Smith Institute. Advancing Opportunity – Routes in and Out of Criminal Justice suggests a new agenda is needed on crime and criminal justice. Such an agenda needs to comprise at least four elements: a more sparing use of criminal justice as a response to social ills; more concerted efforts to prevent and tackle the social exclusion which lies behind much serious and persistent wrong doing; greater availability of restorative approaches to deal with conflicts inherent in crime; and more imaginative options for enabling people in conflict with the law to turn their lives around.
