ICPS launches new phase of work in Libya

Phase three of the Prison Improvement Programme was formally launched in Tripoli on February 3rd. The Programme is a partnership between ICPS, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Libyan Judicial Police. The launch was addressed by the Libyan Minister of Justice Mustafa Abdeljalil, British Ambassador Sir Vincent Feane, Lord Ramsbotham member of ICPS Advisory Board, ICPS Director Rob Allen and Projects Director Andy Barclay. A press briefing was also held at the British Embassy.
The launch was the highlight of a series of activities aimed at continuing the progress of reform in Libyan prisons through better training and management of staff, improved rehabilitation opportunities for prisoners and work to reduce overcrowding. The visit included a workshop on alternatives to prison and meetings with Dr. Saif Gaddafi, Counselor Abdel Rahman Al-Aabar the newly appointed Attorney General, the Gaddafi International Development and Charity Foundation and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
