The London-based Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS), a global partnership spearheaded by Georgetown University Law Center, received the 2011 Andrew Heiskell Award for International Partnerships from the Institute of International Education (IIE) on the 18th March in New York.
This is the first time the award has been given to a programme focused on legal education. The Center is a first-of-its kind, collaborative project involving ten premier law schools from around the world, including King’s College London, to offer transnational legal education.
"I am pleased to see CTLS, and the innovative cooperation of its partner schools around the world, recognised in this way. We thank IIE for the honor," said Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor. "CTLS offers a vision of what legal education can aspire to in an increasingly interconnected world. We believe that the Center uniquely prepares its students for global legal practice in the 21st century."
The Heiskell Awards were established in 2001 "to promote and honor the most outstanding initiatives being conducted in international higher education by IIENetwork member universities and colleges." The Heiskell Award for International Partnerships recognises "innovative international partnership efforts." Heiskell Awards are also presented in the categories of "Internationalizing the Campus" and "Study Abroad."
Launched in the heart of London’s legal quarter in 2008, CTLS brings together faculty and students from five continents and 24 of the world’s leading law schools to study international, transnational and comparative law. The Center’s mission is to help prepare students for transnational legal practice by exposing them to ideas, faculty and fellow students from different legal systems and cultures.
