CORONERS REFORM IN NORTHERN IRELAND

The Northern Ireland Court Service has issued a consultation paper on its Proposals for Administrative Redesign. This is intended to lead to such changes in the coroners' system as can be mede without the need for primary legislation. The consultation period ends on 30 April 2004.

The principal proposals are to create a single coroner's jurisdiction in Northern Ireland, to revise the judicial structure (by having one full time coroner and two fulltime deputy coroners, plus a High Court judge to preside), improving the service, establishing protocols with other agencies, enhanced information systems, and introducing a coroners service inspectorate,.
