Financial loss allowances and fees in coroners' courts

Jurors and witnesses (including professional and expert witnesses) are entitled to claim certain allowances for attending the coroner's court.  In addition, pathologists may also claim a fee for carrying out a post-mortem examination (in addition to any fee for attending the hearing to give evidence).  These allowances and fees are prescribed from time to time by the Home Secretary, under s 24(1) of the Coroners Act 1988.  Those currently in force (as from 1 January 2000) are set out in a Home Office Circular, No 56 of 1999, issued on 2 November 1999.
