Australia
Coroners operate in Australia in slightly different ways to England, and each of the Australian States has its own legislation and its own system. Many coroners have jurisdiction to investigate non-fatal events, such as fires. Some Australian coroners have their own webpages. A general guide to coroners in Australia, together with contact details for the various states' coronial systems, can be found on the Monash University National Coroners Information site.
Australian caselaw and legislation, as well as much other legal information,
can be obtained from the Australian
Legal Information Institute. There are textbooks
on Australian coroners’ law, and (in New South Wales) an Internet guide to Going
to the Coroner’s Court. In 1994 the National Injury Surveillance
Unit produced a feasibility
study for a national coronial information system, which contains much interesting
and useful information on the Australian systems. This information system is
now up and running, at the Monash
University National Centre for Coronial Information.
