Decided cases

In England and Wales, reports of decided cases can be found in published series of law reports. These may be general, such as the official Law Reports, the Weekly Law Reports, or the All England Law Reports (available online on subscription). Or they may be subject specific, such as Butterworths Medical Law Reports and the Justice of the Peace Reports (which reports more coroners’ cases than any other series currently).  Or notes and transcripts of more recent cases can be accessed through online subscription services, such as Lawtel and Casetrack.

Cases can also be found in casebooks, which contain a selection of relevant judgments. These include:

Knapman and Powers, Sources of Coroners’ Law, 1999, Barry Rose

Knapman and Powers, Casebook on Coroners, 1989, Barry Rose

Transcripts of unreported judgments can also be obtained from court transcribers, such as Smith Bernal.  In England and Wales, some can be obtained free on the Internet. These include:  The House of Lords (since 14 November 1996) (for the Privy Council see below)

The Court Service website for the High Court and the Court of Appeal, which now has the text of quite a few judgments, going back to 1996 (but is by no means complete)

The British and Irish Legal Information Institute ("BAILII") website, which carries a large number of cases from all levels of the judicial systems in the UK and in Ireland. These include practically all House of Lords cases and a considerable number of those in the Court of appeal, plus a number in the High Court. (It also has statutory material from these jurisdictions.)

A number of otherwise unreported English coroners' cases are available here on this site. Links to some of the coroners' cases available in other public databases are available here. There are also websites where the caselaw of other jurisdictions can be obtained free of charge, including Australia, Canada, Jersey and New Zealand. The website of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (which deals with appeals from some Commonwealth countries, and also certain UK devolution and professional disciplinary appeals) contains the texts of all judgments from 1999 (these are also on the BAILII site, above).
